The 1918 uprising among Czech soldiers in the Austro-Hungarian army has been a subject of debate and differing interpretation for many years.
The Rumburk Revolt exhibit explores the anti-war uprising of Czech soldiers in the replacement battalion of the 7th Rifle Regiment of the Austro-Hungarian Army that broke out on 21 May 1918.
Initially sparked by a dire lack of supplies (the soldiers were starving), unpaid wages and bullying by German officers, the revolt spread to take on additional meaning for those who participated and for the region as a whole, especially when viewed in the lens of Czechoslovakia’s declaration of independence from the Hapsburg Empire just months afterward.
